STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA
Central Chapter Dinner Meeting:
As 3D concrete printing moves into building-scale applications, its value extends beyond automation to formwork-free fabrication, geometric flexibility, and selective material placement. Realizing these benefits requires reliable performance both during printing and throughout service. Research at Arizona State University integrates material development, printing strategies, and predictive modeling to address buildability, early-age shrinkage, and direction-dependent mechanical behavior. Experimental and computational studies establish how layer configurations, interfaces, and fiber reinforcement influence strength, deformation, and failure. Multi-material members combining conventional and ultra-high-performance concrete demonstrate how strategic material placement can balance structural capacity, cost, and environmental impact. Together, these advances connect material behavior to member-level performance, providing tools for evaluating printed components and optimizing their design. The work supports the translation of emerging fabrication capabilities into practical, resource-efficient structural applications.
