    Central Chapter Dinner Meeting:

    Caisson Strengthening

Many existing structures, such as self-supporting telecommunication towers, are built with constant-width caisson foundations. Due to the increased demand to add more loading on these structures, and more stringent strength requirements in recently-revised design standards, many existing caisson foundations require significant strengthening for additional uplift resistance. Although a number of retrofit design solutions are frequently used in practice, there is a lack of literature providing guidelines for the proper analysis of the retrofitted foundations. A detailed analysis and design methodology is recently proposed to significantly increase the uplift capacities of existing caissons through the use of helical/micro piles and concrete cap beams. This presentation will introduce the proposed methodology, and present the strut-and-tie and finite element models developed to verify the system-level behavior. The overall design methodology will be presented in a case study involving an existing tower. The proposed design has a general applicability and is suitable for applications where there is limited space around the existing foundations.

    Serhan Guner

Serhan Guner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Toledo, Ohio. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto, Canada. Prior to joining Toledo, he worked as a consulting structural engineer for five years in Toronto. During this time, he was awarded the Carson Innovation Award for his retrofit design of a large foundation system. He is a voting member of Joint ACI-ASCE Committee 447 (Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Structures). His research interests include numerical modeling of retrofitted concrete structures, failure behaviour of concrete, pile caps and helical piles, and analysis of deep elements, disturbed regions and anchorage zones. More information about his research can be found in his university website at http://www.utoledo.edu/engineering/faculty/serhan-guner/

Structural Modeling: An Essential Skill for Engineers

Learning how to properly model in structural software can save you both time and money. This presentation will cover the common pitfalls of structural modeling, and will include important tips to keep in mind when building models. Also covered will be rules of thumb for FEA plate modeling, as well as methods of integrating/coordinating a structural model between multiple software applications. Expect to learn the best practices to improve the speed and accuracy of your structural designs.

    Debbie Penko

Debbie Penko is a licensed engineer in California and joined RISA in 2007.  Debbie is the COO which has her involved in all aspects of the software including technical support, marketing, and sales, as well as development and testing.  Debbie has a wide variety of experience before coming to RISA including working in New York for Wexler and Associates designing commercial concrete Hi-Rise buildings. She has also specialized in Cold Formed Steel and trusses working for a software company called Keymark Enterprises. In both Colorado and New York, she has worked in the telecom industry designing and analyzing cellular towers.
