A Common Sense Approach to "Deferred Submittals & Delegated Design"

The IBC specifies requirements for the Structural Engineer of Record (SER) if some of a project design is to be delegated to a specialty structural engineer (SSE). Although seemingly straightforward, the process to successfully accomplish delegated design relies on collaboration of many parties. There is not much black and white and a whole lot of gray to navigate to be successful with your project.  We will discuss roles and process as well as strategies for successfully implementing delegated designs and deferred submittals

Ben Nelson, P.E., is Principal and former Director of Structural Engineering for Martin/Martin, Inc. and now serves as Chair for its Board of Directors. He has 38 years' experience, all with the same firm. He is a former Board Member of the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado and served as President in 1999. He was elected to the NCSEA Board in 2007 and served through 2013 and President in 2012. He has presented on various professional practice topics in seminars, webinars and national symposiums for NCSEA, and for SEA's in Montana, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Florida and Idaho as well as the Structural Engineering Leadership Institute.
