February Tucson Chapter Lunch Meeting

The Need for Geotechnical Engineering in Foundation Design and Repair

By Ralph M. Pattison, P.E.

The topic of the presentation will address the benefit and need for geotechnical engineering for new construction, as well as when developing repair schemes for structures damaged by soil related problems.  The topic will include the need to adequately define and characterize soil strata and soil properties to a sufficient depth and extent before proceeding with construction or a foundation repair, and the risks associated with proceeding with design without this information.  The topic will include case histories.  The discussion will also address the need for close collaboration between the geotechnical engineer and a structural engineer in developing foundation design details and repair schemes.
